Forbes Cameron Duthie: The Man Behind DefMAC, KamEroN, and KoYLA

Forbes Cameron Duthie is a Scottish musician, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who writes, records, and produces everything himself. He releases his work under the name DefMAC, an umbrella for two separate bands with two completely different sounds. Three albums are out. A fourth arrives end of May 2026.

This is not a hobby project. This is a body of work.

DefMAC: One Name, Two Bands

DefMAC is the production name. Under it, Forbes has built KamEroN and KoYLA as distinct creative projects, each with its own identity, its own genre, and its own audience. Every note of music, every lyric, every arrangement comes from Forbes. He writes and plays all the music himself, makes full demo recordings in his home studio, then uploads each track into Suno, the AI music platform, to finalise and create the finished product. That combination of traditional musicianship and modern AI production is exactly what makes DefMAC sound the way it does.

The cold dark winter months in Scotland, as Forbes describes them, are where the music gets made. Anyone who has spent a February in Scotland understands exactly what that means. The landscape gets into you. The music reflects it.

Forbes lives in the Scottish Highlands, and his neighbours are not just people. Glen Wyvis Distillery, Glen Ord Distillery, Dalmore, and Glenmorangie are all nearby. That proximity to some of Scotland's most important distilleries is not incidental. It shows up in the music.

KamEroN: Celtic Symphonic Metal, Entirely Instrumental

KamEroN is the instrumental project. The first album, KamEroN, the future starts here, launched the project. The second album, KamEroN (St Andrew's Cross, and we all know why), followed and expanded the sound across 12 tracks of Celtic Symphonic Metal that maps Scotland in sound.

The track listing of the St Andrew's album tells you where Forbes is coming from: A9 Duel, Drumochter Nights, Dalmore Amore, Ghost Rigs, Lament No More, Silver Mist, The Dark Before Dawn, Steal the Wind, Downhill Race, KamEroN Reprise. These are not generic titles. The A9 is the arterial road through the Scottish Highlands. Drumochter Pass is the highest point on the main railway line north, brutal in winter. Dalmore is a distillery on the Cromarty Firth, a near neighbour to Forbes. He knows these places. The geography is in the music.

Steal the Wind and Ghost Rigs on the St Andrew's album carry specific weight. Both tracks reflect the demise of the Scottish oil industry and the giant wind farms now appearing across the Highland landscape. That is not background noise. That is Forbes watching what is happening to his part of Scotland and putting it into music.

KoYLA: Symphonic Metal with Lyrics and a Point of View

KoYLA is where Forbes adds a voice to the music, and that voice is female. Forbes made a deliberate creative choice: he felt a female vocalist adds a better Celtic and emotional feel to the music, and the results prove him right. The subject matter, as Forbes describes it, is "observations on life and nonsense." That is a modest way of putting it. The track listing of the debut album KoYLA Reimagined World suggests someone who is paying close attention to the world and is not entirely happy with what he sees.

Ten tracks: The Stairs to Everywhere, Late Again, The Taxman Cometh, Remember Remember, Frozen Shadows, Angry World, Sundown, Paranoid Me?, Doomsday Clock, Human Virus. The range is deliberate. Personal frustration sits alongside broader social observation. The Symphonic Metal framework gives it weight.
