The Character of Speyside
Home to more than half of all Scotland's malt whisky distilleries, Speyside sits in the northeast of Scotland, centred on the River Spey. This fertile valley produces some of the world's most celebrated whiskies — elegant, fruity, and complex.

History
A History of Speyside Whisky
The River Spey has been central to whisky production since the 18th century. The region's fertile barley fields, pure spring water, and cool climate created ideal conditions for distilling. By the late 1800s, the Speyside whisky boom had transformed the valley, with distilleries appearing in almost every village. The Strathspey Railway, opened in 1863, connected the region to markets across Britain and beyond. Today, Speyside hosts over 50 active distilleries, making it the most concentrated whisky-producing region on earth. The Malt Whisky Trail, established in 1999, draws over 100,000 visitors annually to explore the region's distilling heritage.
